Bread and Roses Inn was constructed in 1882 by A. B. Cunningham, the local dentist and pharmacist. It received designation as a Provincial Heritage Property in 1993 based on the fact that it is a unique example in Nova Scotia of a brick Queen Anne Revival mansion. This exceptional building features many unique architectural details. Of special note in the interior is the use of many fine woods such as mahogany, black walnut, ash, black cherry, oak and tiger maple, often combining two side by side for contrast. Also of interest are the intricately detailed hardware fixtures on the doors, the coloured etched glass in the large foyer window and the side entrance, and the decorative tile around the main floor fireplaces. Bread and Roses Inn offers nine spacious guest rooms, each with ensuite facilities. All of our rooms are furnished with fine period antiques.
During its 28 years as a well-known inn, it has been constantly updated and renovated. The Inn has been featured in many travel guides such as Fodors, Frommers, The Mobil Travel Guide, Canadian Bed & Breakfast Book, Lonely Planet Guide to Canada and numerous books on Atlantic Canada. It is also included in many foreign language travel guides. We are a member of the Association of Unique Country Inns.
We are located in the heart of the historic district with the historic gardens, the farmers and traders market all close by.
