Experiencing the wonders of northern Canada doesn't mean roughing it when you stay at the premier full service hotel in the Northwest Territories. Located at the entrance to the City of Yellowknife, The Explorer Hotel has been a prominent landmark for over 30 years. It's a natural starting point for a leisurely stroll to Old Town and Back Bay, or quick dash to a business meeting in the downtown core.
With 127 rooms, The Explorer Hotel is the largest hotel in the Northwest Territories. Spectacular panoramic views await you in your spacious room at The Explorer Hotel. Overlooking Niven Lake and Back Bay to the north and Frame Lake and the Legislative Assembly to the south, our hotel rooms are unique in Yellowknife.
Extensive conference and meeting facilities allow us to accommodate formal banquets for up to 350 people in the main ballroom. Traders Grill and Trapline Lounge features a wide variety of local and contemporary cuisine and seating for over 135 people.
The Explorer Hotel has enjoyed a celebrated past and has played a central role in the Yellowknife community. It was the home of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in the 1970's. Such prominent guests as the Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip, Prince Charles, former Prime Minister Jean Chretien, Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, and actor Leonard Nimoy (Dr. Spock, Star Trek) have all stayed at the Explorer.
In May 2004, Nunastar Properties Inc. purchased The Explorer Hotel. A phased $3.5 million upgrade and renovation of the hotel has commenced and was completed December 2005. Nunastar is one of the largest property companies in northern Canada with a 35 year history. The company also owns the award winning Frobisher Inn ( www.frobisherinn.com ) in Iqaluit, Nunavut. The Frobisher Inn won the prestigious 2003 Excellence Award from Nunavut Tourism and the 2004 Business of the Year Award from the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce.
